What Happens During Root Canal Treatment?

Root canal therapy is performed to remove the infected or damaged pulp from inside your tooth, clean and disinfect the area, and seal it to prevent future infection. Here’s what to expect:

Examination and Diagnosis

Dr. Shelburne or Dr. Davenport will examine your tooth and take X-rays to assess the extent of the infection and determine if root canal therapy is the right treatment for your situation.

The Procedure

The area around the tooth is numbed with local anesthesia. Once you’re comfortable, a small opening is made in the top of the tooth to access the pulp chamber. The infected or damaged pulp is removed, and the inside of the tooth is carefully cleaned and shaped. The tooth is then filled with a special material and sealed.

Restoration

After root canal treatment, your tooth will need a crown to protect it and restore full function. This is typically placed in a separate appointment after the tooth has healed. Most root canal procedures can be completed in one or two visits to our Castlewood office, depending on the complexity of the case.

Is Root Canal Treatment Painful?

Root canals have a reputation for being painful, but modern techniques and anesthesia make the procedure comfortable. Most patients report that the procedure itself feels similar to getting a filling. The pain you were experiencing from the infected tooth is typically relieved once the infection is removed. After treatment, you may experience some mild tenderness for a few days as the area heals. This can usually be managed with over-the-counter pain medication.
