Benefits of Chewing Sugar-Free Gum

premier • April 12, 2021

In the past, you may have been told that chewing gum is bad for your teeth. However, this isn’t true of sugar-free gum. It can benefit your teeth in a few different ways. Some of these ways you may already realize while others you may not.

Freshens Your Breath

Most sugar-free gums are sweetened with Xylitol which is a natural sweetener that helps freshen your breath. Additionally, sugar-free gum also kills any bacteria in your mouth that may be causing a bad odor.

Alleviates dry Mouth

Many people suffer from having a dry mouth due to a decrease in saliva production. There are some medical conditions (e.g. lupus, Parkinson’s disease) that can cause a dry mouth. Many medications are also known to cause dry mouth. When you chew sugar-free gum you’ll be able to increase your saliva production, thus doing away with your dry mouth.

Prevents Cavities

According to dentists, chewing a piece of sugar-free gum for 20 minutes after you’ve eaten a meal will help decrease the likelihood that you’ll develop cavities. This is because when the gum increases your saliva production the saliva is able to get rid of any leftover food particles from your meal. Sugar-free gum is also known to help neutralize any bacteria that may cause cavities.

Strengthens Your Enamel

When you have acid in your mouth it won’t only cause cavities but it will also result in the erosion of your enamel. By chewing sugar-free gum you’re helping to reduce the amount of acid in your mouth which, in turn, will help to protect your tooth enamel. By strengthening your enamel you’re decreasing the likelihood that you’ll develop cavities.

Reduces Your Teeth’s Sensitivity

If you’ve ever had your teeth professionally whitened you may notice that they’ve become a bit more sensitive. One way of reducing this sensitivity is by chewing a piece of sugar-free gum. This is because chewing gum will increase your mouth’s saliva production.
