Benefits of Sealant

premier • September 7, 2021

Brushing and flossing are the best ways to help prevent cavities, but it’s not always easy to clean every nook and cranny of your teeth. While these practices are important, dental sealants are very effective in preventing cavities in your teeth. Dental sealants are a thin coating that is painted on your teeth to protect them from cavities.  Besides preventing tooth decay, dental sealants can prevent the early stages of decay from becoming a full-blown cavity.

How do Sealants Work?

You can think of them as raincoats for your teeth. When the cavity-causing bacteria inside your mouth meets leftover food particles, they produce acids that can create holes in teeth. These holes are known as cavities. After the sealant has been applied to your teeth, it keeps those bits of food out and stops bacteria and acid from settling on your teeth.

How long do sealants last?

Sealants can protect your teeth from decay for up to 10 years, but they need to be checked for chipping or wearing at regular dental check-ups. They can also be replaced as necessary to ensure they are effective in protecting your teeth.

Benefits of Sealant

There are many benefits of sealant treatment. Most often, sealants are used in children, but adults with tooth decay can highly benefit from them as well. Some of the diverse benefits include the following:

  • Sealants protect the grooves of your teeth from food particles.
  • Protection of teeth begins immediately after application.
  • They are easy to apply and only take a few minutes to dry.
  • Sealants are durable under the force of normal chewing and can last several years before you can consider reapplication.
  • Sealants are durable and proactive in preventing tooth decay.
  • Sealants are white or clear in color, making them virtually invisible when talking, smiling, and eating.
  • Both children and adults can benefit from sealants in the fight against tooth decay.
