What Can Cause Bad Breath

premier • December 4, 2019

Bad breath or halitosis can be very embarrassing and might cause anxiety in social settings. It does not come as a surprise that stores fill themselves with mints, gums, and mouthwashes designed to fight bad breath. However, most of these products are only short term solutions that do not address the cause of the problem. The foods you eat can be a sign of a deeper issue of oral health. Below are some of the possible causes of bad breath.

Oral health

In most cases, poor mouth hygiene causes bad breath. When you fail to properly and regularly clean your mouth, food particles left in your mouth lead to a buildup of bacteria on your teeth. The surface of your tongue can also trap food particles and bacteria in the mouth, which produces bad breath. Poor oral hygiene also causes other oral health conditions, for example, gum disease that also contributes to bad breath. The best defense you can have against halitosis is thorough and consistent oral care routine.

Alcohol consumption and smoking

The more often you drink, the more likely you are to experience halitosis. Excessive consumption of alcohol reduces the level of saliva production, thereby creating a favorable playground for bacteria to grow instantaneously. Tobacco products cause bad breath and in most cases, lead to serious health issues. Smoking leaves your mouth smelling like an ashtray and damages gum tissue. These can all lead to bad breath.

Prescription medication

Hundreds of medications have the side effect of leaving the mouth dry. The mouth becomes dry as a result of a reduction in saliva production. This creates an environment for bacteria causing odor to thrive. Extended periods with a dry mouth cause discomfort and bad breath. When some medications are broken down in the body, they release chemicals that can carry through the bloodstream to your breath.

Bad breath can be a sign of an underlying serious health issue. Therefore, it is essential to check in with your dentist if you are experiencing these symptoms.
