How To Care of Your Child’s Braces

premier • March 2, 2020

Convincing your kid to wear braces is a tough task for several parents. When the thought of going to the dentist or orthodontist pops up in your child’s mind, they immediately associate it to pain. As a thoughtful and caring parent, it’s your job to explain to your kid the overall orthodontic procedure, so they know it’s not painful. In addition, it shows the results are well worth the effort.

When Do Braces Hurt

People often experience discomfort during the first few days after their braces are fitted. The teeth and mouth are not used to the presence of braces quite yet. In most cases, the discomfort will disappear after a few days, and you can resume your daily routine without hardly noticing the braces at all. The orthodontist often provides orthodontic wax to use in case of discomfort. The wax creates a barrier between the inner part of your lips and cheeks. As a result, the braces won’t irritate you. Taking painkillers is also possible if the pain dramatically affects your child’s daily activities.

Oral Hygiene

Proper oral hygiene becomes crucial to your kid’s dental health during orthodontic treatment. Poor dental care can easily lead to cavities, gum disease, and loss of teeth. Even though your child is seeing an orthodontist, it is essential for their dentist also to follow their progress. Your child should continue annual dentist visits while wearing braces. The dentist has various tools that help clean around braces to keep gums happy and healthy! Here are other tips to protect your child’s teeth.

  • Brush regularly, preferably after each meal.
  • If you cannot brush, rinse with water to avoid plaque buildup.
  • Floss
  • Eat proper foods: avoid sticky, hard, and sweet foods during treatment.
  • Visit your dentist!

Braces are a massive investment for parents and children. That makes it even more crucial to take great care of them.
