Implant Dentistry: Are they Right for You?

premier • August 9, 2019

For anyone with missing teeth, smiling and laughing is no longer a fun thing to do; most people end up refusing to laugh at all or covering their mouths when they do so. Missing teeth can cause more than just physical discomfort. They can erode confidence, create an aged appearance and even impact the way you chew and digest your food. Because of this, replacement teeth or dental implants are surging in popularity and offer a solution to the problems caused by missing teeth.

What Are Dental Implants?

A dental implant is a permanent replacement for a missing or damaged tooth; unlike dentures, this innovative replacement for natural teeth stays in place all the time and creates a natural, restored appearance. If you have lost a tooth due to injury or decay, a dental implant may be the best way to replace it. Knowing about dental implants will help make your decision easier.

What Can I Expect from the Dental Implant Process?

At Riviera Smiles, we begin with an exam and consultation to determine if you are a good candidate for implants and if this process will restore your smile and confidence. If you are a good match, we will create a crown or artificial tooth; this will be custom made to match your original teeth and will become a permanent part of your smile.

Next, a titanium pin is implanted directly into the bone in your jaw; this ensures the new tooth is anchored just like a natural one. In some cases, you’ll need time to heal after this part of the process; as you heal, your own natural bone will grow and secure the new tooth into place. Some patients can receive their new tooth at the same time the pin is implanted, others need to wait for bone growth. Those who have to wait to heal will be provided with a temporary cover to immediately fill the gap and preserve your smile. The custom crown is added once healing is complete. Since each patient is unique, the process and timing may differ; the best way to determine what to expect from dental implants is to come in for a consultation and appointment.
