Dentists often tell us that we should change our toothbrush every 3-4 months for the sake of our dental health. However, not all of us listen to this advice, and many wonder why should we change toothbrushes when the current one still looks good?
The answer is, it depends. Generally, we change our toothbrushes when the current one can no longer do an excellent job of protecting our teeth.
Choosing the right type of toothbrush is not only crucial for your oral health but also helps prolong its useful life. If you are confused, do not hesitate to consult your dentist. The two most important criteria to pay attention to are the bristle hardness and the shape of the head. An elongated head allows you to reach areas not easily accessible. This can include part of the gum line or behind the molars. Be gentle when brushing your teeth and rinse the toothbrush thoroughly before storing it in an upright position in a dry and clean place.
No matter how well you care for your toothbrush, it’s still advisable to change it periodically. Especially, when you notice the bristles getting frayed. After recovering from a cold, you should change your toothbrush to avoid reinfection. It’s highly likely the bacteria has infected the bristles.
