What Is Dry Mouth?

premier • November 10, 2020

Dry mouth is a condition that leaves people feeling uncomfortable and self-conscious. So, where does it come from, and how can we fix it?

Dry Mouth

Dry mouth, also known as xerostomia, is when there is not enough saliva produced. Therefore your mouth becomes dry. When this happens, your mouth can become uncomfortable, and you might acquire bad breath. Saliva is key in moistening and cleansing your mouth that also aids digestion too. In addition, saliva prevents infection by controlling the bacteria in your mouth. So what causes this condition?

Causes

This can result from medications, illnesses, medical treatments, nerve damage, dehydration, and salivary gland removal. The two most popular reasons are medication and illnesses. Read along for more information on each.

Medication

Dry mouth is a common side effect of these medications.

  • anxiety
  • depression
  • pain
  • allergies
  • colds
  • obesity
  • acne
  • epilepsy
  • hypertension
  • asthma

Illnesses

Certain medical conditions also cause dry mouth that includes Sjögren’s syndrome, HIV/AIDS, Alzheimer’s disease, diabetes, anemia, cystic fibrosis, rheumatoid arthritis, and hypertension Parkinson’s disease, stroke, and mumps.

Treatment

The good news is that dry mouth is treatable ! Sometimes all it takes is a few changes to your everyday routine. If not, your dentist can help! Simple tips for treating this condition include avoiding acidic candy or gum. Many people chew gum or suck on candy throughout the day, but what they don’t realize is that it can cause this. Staying hydrated is also a great way to increase the saliva in your mouth. Dentists also recommend brushing with fluoride toothpaste and using fluoride mouthwash because it rids your mouth of bacteria. If none of these at-home treatments are working, your dentist can prescribe saliva boosting medication.
