How To Fix And Prevent Gum Recession

premier • September 26, 2019

Having receding gums can be painful and scary, but you don’t need to worry. Gum recession is a common dental issue that a dentist can prevent and manage when diagnosed on time. According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the condition affects over 60% of American adults.  So if you suspect you or a loved one has gum recession or dental problems, please see your dentist immediately.

What Is Gum Recession?

Gum recession occurs when the tissues that surround your teeth either pull back or wear away leaving your teeth exposed. Over time, gaps develop between your teeth and gum lining, creating a perfect environment for bacteria to build up.

If not treated on time, the condition may severely affect supporting tissue and bone structures, which may result in tooth loss. Unfortunately, most people fail to notice the gum recession early because it develops gradually. Some of the warning signs to watch out for include:

  • Tooth sensitivity
  • Longer tooth than normal
  • Notch near the gum line

What Causes Gum Recession?

There are several factors that can cause gum recession, including:

  • Periodontal disease: Bacterial infections that damage gums can force them to recede.
  • Aggressive brushing: Brushing your teeth too hard can wear away your enamel and force gums to recede.
  • Genetics: If your parent has issues with receding gums, your chances of developing the condition are higher.
  • Poor oral health: Inadequate brushing, rinsing or flossing can give room for bacteria to build up and form tartar which can lead to gum recession. Learn more about ways to maintain a healthy mouth.
  • Hormonal fluctuations: Changes in hormones, particularly in women, such as during pregnancy, menopause or puberty can make your gums more sensitive and susceptible to gum recession.
  • Teeth grinding or bruxism.

How To Fix Gum Recession

Mild gum recession can be treated by your dentist by cleaning the affected area. He/she will carefully remove plaque and tartar build-up and make the exposed area smooth to make it difficult for bacteria to attach.

But if your gum recession cannot be managed by professional dental cleaning due to excessive bone loss and too deep pockets, your dentist may recommend surgery to repair the damage.

How To Prevent Gum Recession

Prevention is always better than cure. So here are ways to prevent receding gums from occurring:

  • Brush your teeth properly using a high-quality toothbrush
  • Wear a night guard
  • Avoid foods that destroy your gums and enamel
  • See your dentist regularly
